Loop, an initiative of US-based waste management company TerraCycle, recently announced that its circular shopping platform will be brought to Canada through Loblaw, a Canadian food and pharmacy company, as its founding retailer. Toronto pilot participants will receive select products from prominent national brands such as President’s Choice in reusable containers from early next year. The products will be delivered right to their doorstep. According to Loop, its platform is the first-ever to partner with retailers and brands for enabling customers to move from disposability to durability with their purchases. Consumers in the Toronto pilot region can still apply to become a participant.
“With its commitment to environmental sustainability and its operational scale, Loblaw is the perfect partner for bringing Loop to Canada. Together, we’ll help to bring an improved product experience to consumers and eliminate the idea of waste, as we bring back yesterday’s milkman model rebooted for reflecting today’s convenience,” said Founder of Loop and TerraCycle, Tom Szaky.
Loop launched a pilot program for US market last month
The news about the partnership with Loblaw comes not many days after Loop announced Walgreens and Kroger as founding members for a pilot program for its reusable packaging solution in the US. Walgreens is the second-largest pharmacy store chain in the US and Kroger is an American retail company. With Loop, a range of commonly used products can be consumed responsibly by customers in brand-specific, customized durable packaging delivered in a reusable shipping tote that is specially designed, according to Loop. After using the product, the packaging can be collected for cleaning, refilling, and reusing it, which creates a circular shopping system that is revolutionary.
“There’s too much of plastic waste. Our industry is part of the problem and we could be part of the solution. The Loop partnership is a powerful instance of entrepreneurial innovators operating with like-minded large organization for bringing a meaningful solution to a real problem,” said Loblaw’s Executive Chairman, Galen Weston.
According to sources, Canada’s one of largest private sector employers, Loblaw has over 2,400 associate-owned, franchised, and corporate locations.
