Chinese scientists have recently found that the coronavirus behind the mysterious pneumonia cases belongs to the same family that produced severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
New Coronavirus not as Fatal as SARS or MERS
However, the new coronavirus doesn’t seem to be as deadly as SARS or MERS. Fever and difficulty in breathing are some of the major symptoms of this new illness. As per sources, 8 patients had been discharged from hospital and no deaths have been reported to date. The disease has sickened 59 people, with 7 patients critically ill. No evidence of human-to-human transmission has been found.
Supportive Treatments to Cure the Symptoms
According to Professor Leo Poon, a virologist at the University of Hong Kong and a diagnostic expert in identifying viruses, just as SARS and MERS, there may not be efficient treatments that target the new coronavirus directly, but treatments, including assisted respiration and fever relief, can be given to treat the signs.
Poon further commented, "Most of the coronaviruses that animals carry are not dangerous to humans. The new strain that caused this current illness may have been triggered by humans getting infected from animals that usually we did not have contact with earlier.’’
WHO to Carry out Further Outbreak Examination
The WHO reflected, "Broad study is needed to understand the present status and epidemiology of the illness. Further examinations are also required to verify the source, extent of infection, modes of transmission, and precautionary actions to be taken." The organization did not suggest any restrictions on travel or trade to China due to the virus.
At the back of Wuhan outbreak, governments across Asia have started taking precautions such as notification requirements and temperature screening at the airports.
